Why a guitar pick chokes on bass strings
A bass string carries a lot more mass than a guitar string. To get it moving through a full swing, the pick has to transfer real energy into it. If you only tune one variable, tune thickness. On our gauge bands, anything over 2.5 mm is extra-heavy, 1.6\u20132.5 mm is heavy, 0.81\u20131.5 mm is medium, and 0.8 mm and under is thin. Bass players almost always want to live in the heavier end of that range, and here's why the physics rewards it:
- Energy transfer. A stiff pick delivers your stroke straight into the string. That's fundamental and low-mid weight \u2014 the part of the note that makes a bass sound like a bass.
- Consistency. A pick that doesn't flex meets the string the same way every stroke, so your dynamics stay even instead of collapsing when you dig in.
- Less pick noise. A thin pick snaps off the string and leaves that clacky top-end. A thicker tip rolls off cleaner and the click drops back into the tone.
The trade is feel. A very stiff pick gives you almost no give, which is exactly what you want for controlled, heavy playing but can feel stiff for fast passages. That's why it's worth thinking about thickness as a range you dial in, not a single magic number.
The dedicated bass tank: Juggernaut
If you want the clearest example of the mechanism, it's Juggernaut. It runs 3.0 mm thick \u2014 extra-heavy \u2014 with a flex rating of 5, meaning it barely bends at all. That stiffness is the point. Its whole tone-DNA is built around the low end: it scores highest of anything we make on Bass, Compression, Warmth and Dynamics, with strong Control on top. Size and shape: leverage and where you hold it
Thickness gets most of the credit, but body size changes how a pick behaves in your hand. A larger body gives you more surface to grip and more leverage over a heavy string \u2014 that's why bigger picks feel more planted on bass. It's also why players with larger hands often reach for XL bodies: more real estate, less pinch, less fatigue over a long set.
Shape matters at the tip. A rounder, wider tip pushes more string and gives you that broad, warm attack \u2014 great for bass. A pointier tip is more articulate and defined. Neither is wrong; it's a tone choice. If you play a lot of driving eighth-note lines, a slightly more defined tip helps notes stay separate. If you want thick, round support under a band, go wider.
Not every bass line wants 3 mm
Extra-heavy is the classic bass answer, but it isn't the only one. If you play more aggressive, chugging, pick-forward lines \u2014 think punk and hard rock \u2014 you may want a bit less mass and a bit more snap.
