You're three minutes into the song, the stage lights are cooking, and suddenly you're playing a lead line with the corner of your pick instead of the tip. Sound familiar? The pick didn't get worse. Your grip did. And it happened for a reason you can actually fix.
What's actually happening when your pick slips
Sweat is a lubricant. When your fingertips get damp, the friction between your skin and the flat face of the pick drops off a cliff. A pick is held by two small contact patches he of pressure from your thumb and index finger. Reduce the friction on those patches and the pick starts doing what any low-friction object does under a rotational load: it spins.
That's the part most players miss. A slipping pick usually isn't sliding out of your hand and onto the floor first it rotates. Every downstroke and upstroke puts a tiny twisting force on the pick. Dry hands resist that twist. Wet hands don't, so the pick creeps a few degrees per stroke until you're picking with the shoulder instead of the point. One player described it perfectly: halfway through a song the pick has turned nearly 180 degrees and they're playing lead with the side of it.
The usual advice "just hold it tighter" backfires. Squeezing harder tenses your hand, kills your wrist motion, and you still can't out-clamp a lubricated surface. You're fighting physics with a death grip, and physics wins.
The two things that actually keep a pick in your fingers
There are only two levers that matter here, and neither of them is "grip harder."
1. The gripping surface itself. A tiny, smooth, glossy pick the little jazz shape everyone reaches for becomes an ice skate the moment your hands go slick. There's almost no surface area and no texture for damp skin to bite into. A pick with a matte body and a raised grip zone gives your thumb something to key into even when it's wet. Our composite and nylon bodies aren't polished glass, and several models carry a molded grip zone right where your fingers land.
2. The geometry that resists rotation. This is the big one, and it's where most "grip" picks stop short. Texture slows the pick sliding out. It does nothing to stop the pick twisting in place. To kill rotation you need the body shape to lock your fingers into one orientation so the pick physically can't creep.

A word on the opposite mistake
If you go searching for "grip picks," you'll run into textured, ridged-tip picks marketed on grip. Be careful what problem they solve. That drag is a feature for rhythm and tone, but it fights fast picking, and it does nothing about your fingers slipping on the body. Gear aside, a few habits stack on top of a good pick:
- Keep a small towel or cloth on your amp and wipe your picking hand between songs dry skin is high-friction skin.

- Don't over-squeeze. A relaxed, indexed grip beats a white-knuckle one every time another reason a twist grip helps, since it holds position for you.
