Ever nail a take at home, then grab the same pick on stage and feel like you're fighting the thing all night? Or record a part that sounded huge through the amp but turns into a clicky mess once it hits the mic? You're not imagining it. The room, the mic, and your own adrenaline all change what a pick has to do — and thickness is the single biggest lever you've got.
Before you pick a gauge for either job, it helps to know what thickness actually changes at the string.
What pick thickness does at the string
A thicker pick has more mass and flexes less. Testing across gauges on the same rig consistently shows the same thing: as a pick gets stiffer, more of your picking energy goes into moving the string instead of bending the pick. You get a fuller low end, a firmer and more repeatable attack, and less of that high-frequency "click" that a flexing tip snaps off as it releases.
A thinner pick does the opposite. It bends, and that flex adds a bright top-end transient — the pick-attack sound — while softening the fundamental. On an acoustic that flutter can be gorgeous. On a tight metal riff through a high-gain amp, it can smear the attack and rob you of definition.
Measured studies back the feel: pick thickness moves amplitude, harmonic richness, and how the note decays. None of that is subjective. The question is which of those changes you want in the room you're playing in.
Recording: the mic hears everything
Live, a hundred things mask your pick attack. In front of a mic, nothing does. Every transient, every bit of pick flutter, every inconsistency between downstroke and upstroke gets captured and then amplified again when you compress and EQ the track. Recording is unforgiving in a way a stage never is.
That's why consistency of attack matters more in the studio than raw thickness does. If your pick releases the string a little differently every stroke, the mic catches it, and a fast passage turns to mush under a close mic. What you want is a tip that meets the string the same way every time.
This is the beveled-apex job. The curved, beveled tip glides across the string and releases cleanly and fast, so repeated strokes sound like repeated strokes. On stage the enemy isn't the mic — it's you. Sweat, adrenaline, a pick creeping in your fingers by the third song, and a wall of stage volume that swallows subtlety. The mix already masks fine detail, so a hair of extra brightness or a slightly softer attack won't cost you the way it would on a track. What kills you live is the pick moving.
When a pick rotates in your grip, the tip stops meeting the string the same way, and your timing and tone drift with it. So the live priority flips: you want the pick to stay put so your right hand can go on autopilot.
That's the case for the Torq. It's the same beveled-apex tip system as the Stealth line, on a 2.0mm heavy body with a twist grip. So do you need two picks?
