Your sweeps sound smeared, and it isn't your metronome
You've drilled the arpeggio shapes. You can play them slow and clean. But the second you push the tempo, the whole thing turns to mush — notes bleeding into each other, the low string honking, the top string choking out. Most players respond by grinding harder on speed. That's the wrong lever. The thing that separates a clean five-string sweep from a smeared one isn't how fast your hand moves. It's the angle at which the pick meets the string, and whether that angle stays the same on every note of the pass.
Sweep picking is one fluid rake, not a series of individual strokes. Your pick is supposed to fall through the strings like a knife through a stack of cards — one motion, one continuous release. If the pick catches on any string, the rake stalls, and you hear it. So the entire game is reducing the resistance between the pick and each string, and keeping that resistance identical string to string. That's a geometry problem before it's a speed problem.
The mechanism: edge picking and angle of attack
Two things control how much a pick fights the string. The first is edge picking — tilting the pick so you attack with an edge rather than the flat face. A flat face presents maximum surface to the string and drags; an edged attack slices in and lets go faster. The second is the angle of attack, or pickslant — whether the pick is angled slightly toward the floor or the ceiling as it travels. Get these wrong and the pick has to shove the string out of the way before it releases. Get them right and the release happens almost on its own.
For sweeping specifically, the release matters even more than in alternate picking, because you never reverse direction mid-pass. On a downward sweep the pick has to clear each string and immediately be sitting against the next one, ready. Any pick that grabs or bites the string will interrupt that fall. This is exactly why the sweep-friendly pick is a clean, fast-releasing pick — the geometry has to get out of the string's way.
Why raw speed is the trap
Here's what happens when you chase tempo without fixing the angle. To go faster you tense up. Tension changes how you hold the pick, which changes your edge and slant on the fly — usually flattening it out, which adds drag right when you need less. So the faster you try to go, the more the pick fights you. Players read that as "I need more speed" and dig in harder, deepening the exact problem they're trying to solve. It's a loop.
The fix is boring and it works: lock a consistent, edged angle at a tempo where you can actually hold it, and let speed come off a stable foundation. A pick that presents the same clean edge every time removes one of the biggest variables in that loop. You stop re-negotiating the angle on every pass.
What tip geometry does the work
This is where the pick itself earns its keep — and where a lot of players are quietly fighting their gear. There are two tip systems, and they do opposite jobs.
The Ridged Tip family — Attak, Ambush, Surge, and the rest of the Ridged Tips — uses raised tip texture to add drag on purpose. That drag is fantastic for harmonic bite, percussive rhythm, and acoustic texture. It is exactly what you do not want under a sweep, because drag is the thing stalling your rake. Great picks, wrong job.
The Beveled Apex family — the Stealth Series and Torq — is built around a curved, beveled tip that glides across the string and releases fast and clean. That's the whole point of the geometry: minimum resistance, maximum consistency of release. This is the sweep-picking answer. It's not a coincidence that the Stealth lists Lead, Shredding, and Sweep Picking as what it's for — the surrounding bevel is doing the release work your technique is trying to do by hand.
Consistency: the underrated half of the equation
Edge and slant only help if they stay put. If the pick rotates in your fingers mid-run — and thin, slick picks love to do that under sweat — your carefully set angle is gone by the third string. This is the case for a stiffer, heavier pick with a real grip: it plants the angle and keeps it there.
The Stealth III is the compact, heavy end of that idea — a thick, low-flex beveled pick that holds its position and points the same edge at every string. The reason that matters for sweeping is simple: if the pick doesn't move, the beveled apex meets every string the same way, pass after pass. A note on anchoring, since it's the other half of the right-hand picture: planting a couple of fingers near the bridge to act as a pivot gives your rake a fixed lever, and leaving a little excess pick beyond your fingers lets the tip travel in a straight sweeping line. A pick that stays put in your grip makes that anchoring pay off, because your hand and the pick are now one rigid tool instead of two moving parts.
