Picking speed is governed by how cleanly the pick releases the string — not by how hard you play or how fast you move your wrist. A pick that catches, drags, or twists costs you milliseconds on every stroke, and those milliseconds are the ceiling you keep hitting.

The mechanism: release, not force
A guitar pick has to do two things on every stroke — meet the string, then leave it. The meeting is easy. The leaving is where speed lives.
A beveled apex is a curved, tapered tip that glides across the string and releases cleanly. There is nothing on the tip to snag, so the pick exits the string at the same moment on every stroke. That consistency is what lets you play the same passage at 180bpm that you could only play at 140.
Raised ridges do the opposite. Ridged tip structures are built to add grip and harmonic content — they engage the string rather than releasing it. That is a genuinely useful property for rhythm playing and harmonic work, and it is the wrong property for speed. The second variable: presentation
Consistent release requires the bevel to meet the string the same way every time. If the pick rotates in your fingers between strokes, the geometry changes stroke to stroke and the advantage disappears.

Does a thicker pick make you play faster?
Not on its own. Thickness controls how much the pick flexes against the string; the tip geometry controls how it releases. A thick pick with a blunt tip will still snag. Thickness matters most on heavy strings and low tunings, where a thin pick loses definition.
